Here's a little information on what we are doing in class:
ELA
Math
Social Studies
Science
Reminders:
ELA
- Kids have been recording their audio versions of picture books. They have been asked to finish the recording stage by the end of this week.
- We are working on some poetry analysis every day. Some things we are working on include, summaries, citing text, providing evidence, and identifying theme. We are getting better at exploring challenging pieces of text.
- For writing, kids have been exploring the idea of blogging. Right now we are practicing online etiquette by blogging on a secure and monitored platform. As kids show responsibility and quality writing they will earn more of a chance to customize and control their blog.
Math
- We continue to study fractions. Our focus is fraction operations (add and subtract for grade 7 and multiply and divide in grade 8) but we are spending a fair bit of time trying to build an understanding of what fractions means. This includes lots of estimation, using benchmarks, and representing number in multiple ways. Our number talks have been geared to help build these skills.
Social Studies
- Students did a mini research project on a civilization of their choosing. We had the first four students present their findings to the class today and they did a great job of summarizing their learning. The rest of the students will be presenting by the end of the week.
Science
- We are wrapping up our look at water and water systems. To end this unit students have been learning what makes water safe to drink and how water is treated. Students will be given the task to design a water filter and will then use the sample provided to see if their water filter makes a difference. Today we did some exploring of pH as one way to test the purity of the water.
Reminders:
