Just an update on the week in Room 7.
We Scare Hunger
Between now and October 30th the Parkside Leadership group is promoting the WeScare Hunger campaign. We are looking for donations for our local food bank. There are some prizes and rewards being offered for individuals and classes. I have attached the image with details.

ELA
We are continuing to look at memoirs. We are using this text to help us learn how to craft our own memoir. When we read a piece we are also looking for the big ideas of a piece of text and then using this to create meaningful and supported connections. This is something as a class we realized we need to work at.
Most mornings we do a quick write to help build our writing stamina. Sometimes kids have a choice as to what they write about and sometimes they are given a specific prompt - such as responding to a line in a poem. You will see some of this work start to appear on SeeSaw.
Math
We have now branched off into different grade 7 and grade 8 topics. Grade 7s are beginning operations with integers while grade 8s are looking at squares and square roots and will prepare for the Pythagorean Theorem next week. We start each class with a number talk, then we sometimes to a mini lesson or boot camp. The class generally ends with some work time on a given task. Check in questions are given regularly and are either corrected by me or by the student. We then talk about what we need to remember, common student mistakes, and conventions.
Social Studies
We are working on note taking in social studies and we just learned about the five major themes of history. When we begin our look at Ancient Mesopotamia next week kids will use the notes about the themes to help them focus their research.
Science
This week we focused on design. Kids had a cup, marble, string, paper clips and some tape and had to create a zipline that the cup could slide down and then remotely drop the marble on the target. Things I was observing was how well students were able to make changes to their design and validate their changes. You will see a video clip of their marble dumping attempts on SeeSaw.
Reminders:
Please contact me if you have any questions, comments or concerns.
Have a wonderful weekend!
