As we approach a long weekend it is a good time to reflect on what we have accomplished this week.
ELA
We are studying memoir and have read a wide variety of text that falls into this genre. We have started brainstorming a list of specific memories that we could tell a story about. Next week we will begin drafting our memoir, thinking about what style of text would best fit the story that we are trying to tell.
We completed the Reading Assessments and I have coded them and returned the class results to the class. Our class summary can be found HERE. We talked about what our strengths were as a class and then pinpointed some areas that we need to work on. The file gives a class overview. I will also share individual feedback with students - I started with the grade 8s today but didn't get to everybody. I will finish that next week. So our goals for the next chunk of time include making notes that are organized and making sure we can support the connections we make with relevant details.
MATH
We are beginning to wrap up our work on area and are starting to move in different directions with the grade 7s and 8s. Next week the grade 7s will finish up with the Cartesian Plane and will begin integer operations, while the grade 8s will continue explore squares, square roots, and begin looking at Pythagorean Theorem.
On Wednesday kids worked on independent questions to show me how well they are understanding area. In order to give feedback that is meaningful (for all subject areas) I will continue to use SeeSaw. I have used SeeSaw for a few years and love what it has to offer. For those who are new to this, you will see that you son/daughter has brought home a paper today that gives information on how to access. I encourage you to connect to their account because you will see all the work that they add to the portfolio, as well as you will see the feedback I am giving to students. For example, for the math assessment questions I uploaded an image and then voice recorded my feedback while doodling. If you want up to date information on how your child is doing, this is definitely the way to know. You can also leave comments and encouragement for you child, which can be powerful.
Social Studies
We are just wrapping up our idea of world view. On SeeSaw you will see a web that students created that shows how they view the world. We will soon move into looking at Ancient Egypt.
Science
We are looking at water systems and continue to dabble with design challenges. Next week will include some research and learning about Lake Winnipeg, as well as a design challenge that details with dropping a marble on a target.
Reminders:
I wish everyone an enjoyable long weekend!
